5 Reasons to Invest in Solar Panels
To better understand the benefits of installing solar panels, check out our five key reasons why you should make the switch to solar energy below.
1. Help the Environment
Obviously, one of the main reasons to install solar panels is because they help the environment. Solar power systems import clean, pure energy from the sun. Installing solar panels on your home or business helps combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduces your dependence on fossil fuel. Traditional electricity is sourced from fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. Consequently, when fossil fuels are burned to create energy, they emit toxic gases that are the primary cause of pollution and global warming.
2. Save Money
Heating water in your home is one of the most energy consuming demands you have. The cost to heat water in your home is likely to be 25 – 30% of your total energy costs; it will be higher if you have more than four people in your home. This may mean that almost half of your electricity bill, or more than 40% of your gas or oil bill, will go towards your domestic hot water costs. Luckily, the sun’s energy can be harnessed for many purposes. One of these is to generate heat. By using solar panels, (a solar collector) sunlight is directly converted into heat. A correctly sized solar water heating system will cover 50 to 60% of your hot water heating requirement with free solar energy. Currently over three million households in Europe use a solar heating system. Just one square metre on your roof can heat as much hot water in one year as using about 400 to 500 units of electricity. On average it can be expected that your electricity usage for hot water will be reduced by between 1200 and 1500 kWh (units of electricity) per year with a three metre square solar collector installed. This is equal to between €192 and €240 annually based on the Standard Tariff rate, according to Electric Ireland.
In addition, not only are fossil fuels bad for the environment but they’re also a finite resource. Limited availability of fossil fuels, like oil and gas, can create a volatile market in which energy prices can skyrocket in a short period of time. Through investment in solar energy, home and business owners are limiting their exposure to this risk in the long-term too.
Grants are available from The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland for certain renewable energy projects under the Better Energy Programme which will help reduce the capital cost involved.
4. The Sun is Reliable
As long as there’s an earth, the sun will continue to shine. Although, Ireland may not be known for its sunny climate, the sun’s radiation levels in Ireland are actually comparable with countries such as France, Germany and Austria. Just one square metre on your roof can heat as much hot water in one year as using about 400 to 500 units of electricity.
5. Proven & Reliable Technology
Solar panels have been around for a long time now and have proven their reliability. They are a relatively simple technology, with few moving parts. They’re created to be durable and require little maintenance. All this plus an easy installation, adds up to a low risk when it comes to solar technology.
